As a huge fan of Japanese cuisine, I was happy to hear of a new Sushi restaurant in town. Mizo is nestled between Italian restaurant Tartufo and Shawarmatec just across from the Tujar Offices near Jeddah’s Tahlia Street.  A jazzy interior and mellow piano beats greeted me on arrival. I had arrived early in local terms, the place was empty save for the few members of staff I could see running around.

Dark wooden tables with beige leather clad chairs surrounded each table; atop of each – a narrow golden vase filled with red berries,  above it was hard to miss the large chandelier of golden coils twirling gracefully over the entrance to Mizo. If looks could impress, so far, so good..

Staff greeted me and quickly opened the menus as I informed them I would be ordering to go. There are two menus here at Mizo, one for sushi, the other for more western main courses. I ordered the usual suspects of Sashimi and Sushi Rolls, these were the tuna sashimi 34 SR, Syake Nigiri 29 SR, Maguro Nigiri 30 SR, and a California roll (shrimp avocado and cucumber) 40 SR.

I also decided to be a little adventurous and tried the steeply priced Lobster Roll (baked with bechemel sauce and melted cheese) for 94 SR, along with the the Spicy Hotate Temaki 47 SR (a Temaki stuffed with spicy garlic and scallop salad).

The total of this ‘trial’ was 274 SR,  a far cry from the 5 SR shawarma available next door, but of course these are worlds apart in terms of the gastronomic experience. Once home, the family dug into the treasure trove of Sushi I had returned with. The Sushi did not disappoint, but most impressive was quite surprisingly; the Lobster Rolls, although hot, these were a rich and creamy treat, with a slight edge of spice. The Scallop Temaki in contrast was a chilly affair, and perhaps less impressive after the lobster.

We didn’t get a chance on this visit to try any of the Mexican inspired Ceviche dishes, or more international style mains, but based on this first experience, we would certainly return, perhaps to dine in next time!
