Tucked away in Khalidiya in the Rawdah District. is Crusty, the latest arrival on the cafe/bakery scene in Jeddah.A Viennese cafe would probably be a more appropriate way to describe Crusty, (in German thats Wiener Kaffeehaus) these remain popular in Vienna and play an important role in the culture there.
Unlike some other cafe traditions around the world, it is completely normal for a customer to linger alone for hours and study the newspaper in the Kaffehaus. Something many of us have little trouble doing.. even more so with the Free WiFi Crusty offer customers..Taking pride in their coffee, Crusty focusses only on the best Viennese coffee and serves Julius Meinl who have been making coffee for over 145 years!
The Austrians certainly have had some time to perfect things, the first coffeehouse in Austria opened in Vienna in 1683 after the Battle of Vienna, (by using supplies from the spoils obtained after defeating the Turks.) Along with coffee, the waiter in a Viennese cafe will serve an obligatory glass of cold tap water and during a long stay will often bring additional water unrequested. This is exactly what happens at Crusty. The idea I am told is to clean your palate before the first sip.
The Attention to detail is superb and the coffee well worth the visit. However if its food your after, the coffee shop/ pâtisserie also has an extensive menu which serves up a variety of meals and beverages with dishes like Cream of Asparagus Soup, Chicken Caesar Salads and Freshly made Quiches.
The Bakery also seems to be drawing in the crowds, Crusty Bakery Includes Baguettes , Sweet & Savory Filled Pastries, fresh Croissants, all of which are unlike anything else you might have come across in Jeddah. Try the German Pretzels (baked fresh each day) they’re super, as is the lemon mint drink. If you have a sweet tooth, there are plenty of Austrian & German treats to satisfy it. Pastries include Raspberry Vanilla Strudel, Cinnamon Sugar Swirls, Nut Nougat Croissants, Creme Brule and the famous Date Cake.
Breakfasts on offer include international, American, continental and local selections which are great for an early morning bite. Myself being a bit of a health fanatic i hope to see some healthier options in the future like skimmed yogurt, muesli & fruit salad etc.. Be warned the Breakfasts are increasingly popular here, such that I was unable to sit down on my last trip there… lets hope they open another branch soon!Keep up the good work Crusty!
Home Delivery Service is also available.

Sadly the closed the khlidia branch
I forgot to mention that after MCI’s decision to illegalize mandatory Service Charge; they’ve rudely taped over the old prices and added approx. 10% to almost everything on the menu!
Over 4 years into business proved that their initial quality (as described by the main reviewer) could not be sustained! They’ve changed the menu and dropped all but one of the pastries recommended by FoodCritic.
I started with the Mana’eesh – which by the way has no resemblance to their ancestors pictured by the main review of this place. Their Mana’eesh are way below par, somewhat undercooked, and very expensive (SR10) compared to any local bakery (SR1-2).
The Crusty Polo Sandwich (off the menu) was recommended by the waiter and tasted a bit too cheesy for me – Mildly Spicy Chicken smothered with Cream Cheese & topped with a slice of Cheddar Cheese.
The Sicilia Cocktail – supposedly a blend of Strawberry, Peach, and Coconut – was good, but the Peach was either missing or barely represented.
I ended my meal with the only item left from FoodCritic’s recommendations; the “famous” Date Cake … and it was AWFUL! Chilled, then microwaved (I heard the beep!), and then served with a drizzle of off-the-shelf caramel sauce. It seemed that I was chewing on a sponge mattress.
Adding to my misery they have TVs! I was the only customer at the singles’ section when I 1st came in, so I really did not bother with the muted TV. However, at the end of my meal, another person sat at a dining table behind me and decided that he wanted to watch the movie playing on MBC2. The waiter carelessly raised the volume and transformed the restaurant into a theater!
Do they have they have the SR35 real mea thing for iftar as well?

I liked it. I only tried their croissant sandwich like with cheese, and it was good!
We love Crusty! Never disappointed with any of our visits. Everything we tried on the menu is very very good…their pancakes are the best in Jeddah. Last time we went, this past weekend, the waiter actually invented a new drink for my husband becuse he was craving something with apples
and it was good! Keep up the good food.
