One of Jeddahs most popular restaurants, Uptown 966 attracts a hip young crowd, along with families and businessmen alike who seem to have taken a liking to the free WiFi service the restaurant offers all customers.

Now in its fourth year (it was formerly Casper & Gambinis), the restaurant continues to draw regular crowds who are obviously not swayed by the latest fads that pops up on the scene in Jeddah. It’s easy to see why — attention to detail in design and cooking is evident everywhere. The singles bar area has low-slung leather couches and small tables for intimate but relaxed dining. While the family section is somewhat lighter with smart clean cut wooden tables, comfy chairs and mellow background music. This redbrick restaurant definitely has a modern feel to it, Modern European favourites fill the menu with dishes you really want to eat. Large portions, & great desserts, try the tiramisu

Uptown is my go-to place whenever I want to go somewhere serene and laid back. It’s a mix between urban elegance and comfortable!

Previously known as/owned by “Casper & Gambini’s”, the building is amazing inside and out. I love the exterior and style, the clean bright light coming in the restaurant brightens my mood. Could stay there for hours.

The food is great, Salads are interesting, appetizers would spark anyone’s interest. And my friend says she loves their soups :D !
Prices are slightly towards the higher end, but for the location, atmosphere and friendly professional service, it is worth it !

Even though I live near by, and I’ve been hearing a lot of good things about this place, I never actually tried it before today (29/3/2011). I must say, for all the hype this place gets, I was disappointed.

The ambience and style are definitely nice: spacious, well-lit (natural day-light) and comfortable. But the food was below expectation. I went with my family (two adults, three kids plus toddler), and we share, so I got a good sampling of several dishes. So here’s what I (we) thought briefly:
    - Chicken Caesar salad: not bad.
    - Wild mushroom soup: tasty, but very rich and the portion is quite large, half way through I felt like it was just too heavy, so don’t order this as an appetizer. It’s more of a meal by itself. The worst thing: we found a small piece of plastic bag in the soup.
    - Chicken pesto pasta: a disappointment. Too creamy for a pesto sauce. There was just too much cream in it, _and_ it was too watery, and there was no salt. None of us liked it.
    - Chicken escalope: First few bites are OK, but then you just get fed up with all the cheese.
    - Good melt burger: this wasn’t bad. Yes, there was a lot of cheese, but I removed some of it and it was OK. They weren’t kidding when they called it good melt. It’s shame really, because aside from the cheese overload, the burger was quite good.

All in all it felt like it was plagued by the American-inspired idea that putting loads of cheese, cream and/or butter on everything makes it taste better. But I suppose some people actually like that.

A very comfortable place. The food is pretty good but inconsistent and probably to me they have lost quality in the past six months.. And prices seem to have gone up a lot, they have a shocking 18 percent service charge they add automatically to any bill. It’s enough to make me think twice about going there, because it becomes expensive rather than just a little pricy.

One of my favorites in Jeddah (and Khobar!), I am a loyal customer of CG and always come away satisfied with a wonderful meal, quality food, good service and can say “When’s my next visit?”. But a true test of a restaurant’s quality of food and service can be tested by ordering Home Delivery.

So after being handed the home delivery menu on our last visit, my husband and I had a hunger for CG’s. But not wanting to dodge traffic all the way to Andalus, we decided to order food to the comforts of our home.

A very courteous man answered the phone, took our order and informed us that it would arrive within 45 minutes … less than 40 minutes later, the food was at our door.

Tomato Basil soup(though not on the home delivery menu but you can order it) was piping hot with a very generous piece of soft, fresh olive bread.

The Philadelphia Cheese Steak sandwich was a monster of a sandwich enough for two! The meat was tender, the green pepper’s had a crunch and the cheese was melted. A foot long sandwich flowed with a delicious filling.

For desert another generous piece of Sticky Toffee Pudding with butterscotch sauce on the side, great for sharing.

CG’s has the best lemon/mint drink in town … not too tart, not too sweet and just the right amount of refreshing mint. It also arrived refreshingly cold.

Everything was individually packed with thoughtful sayings on the wrapping. No leaks, no spills.

What can I say??? You don’t want to battle the traffic of Jeddah … You want to eat quality food in the convenience of your home … give Caspers a call! You will not be disappointed.

As far as i know, Casper & Gambinis were both Irish families settled in Lebanon. Hence they have this mix of Lebanese and Irish cuisine.

    Pros:
Great Lineup of sandwiches, breads and wraps.
Deserts are a great treat at any time.
Presentation of the food is also very unique.

    Cons:
Waiters keep you waiting and are sometimes selective.
The overall theme is pretty confusing mix of east European and Lebanese origins.

I hate buffets. Lukewarm food and (like another writer so eloquently described) Open Warfare isn’t really my idea of an enjoyable dining experience. This is why every Ramadan, I despair of eating in restaurants. But then came Casper&Gambini’s, and my search for the best iftar was over…

Points in favor? There isn’t a buffet.
Food? Excellent. Service? Impeccable! Price? For a high-end restaurant, affordable, and you certainly get your money in quality and quantity.

Now, let’s stop horsing around and get down to reality. Casper&Gambini’s is fairly popular, so I called ahead and reserved a table for six near the window. When we got there, we found our table prepared ahead of time. Each person had a wide array of hot and cold appetizers set in front of them: fattoush, hommous, cheese sambousa, meat sambousa, chilli meat, baba ghanoush, foul (fava beans), kibba, etc. There was also gahwa (Arabic coffee), which my family pronounced to be excellent, and two varieties of dates (sukri and maknooz).

A few minutes before the Maghrib athan, ur appointed waiter whisks by with a tray of juices for you to choose. I personally have a love affair with the C&G’s lemonade so I took that. We also tried the orange juice and the jallab, all freshly squeezed and prepared, and all equally delicious. C&G’s offer two choices of soup, lentil soup and the “soup of the day”. In our case it was cream of artichoke. Both were excellent, though I personally preferred the cream of artichoke. The one downside to them was that the soups came warm, but as soon as the waiter was notified, they were whisked away and heated.

After the soups, we were presented with a choice of two main courses: either the lamb ghouzi (rice with meat), or the shrimp biryani. If I’m not mistaken, these change everyday. Anyway, we were pretty stuffed by the time that came, so we ordered three main meals to share between us, and had the other three wrapped up to go. The lamb ghouzi was delicious, the rice just right and the meat tender. The shrimp biryani was even better, and left us wanting more!
But dessert was next, and we had a choice between the regular C&G desserts and a few new Ramadan ones. We decided to sample them all. The Layali Beirut (caramelized banana with cream and sameed) was good, the sticky toffee pudding the usual fare, the chocolate cake not so much. But the best of them all was the cheese kunafa, and I definitely recommend that. Have the waiter heat it up for you, and that’ll hit the spot! We were also offered either turkish coffee or green tea to cap the evening off.

All in all, I’d say it was a very excellent and satisfying experience, one that I will gladly repeat. Actually, I think I’ll be quite sad to see C&G’s Ramadan iftar go away, very sad indeed!

    Prices:
Adults: 110 S.R plus 10% charge for service
Children under 12: 65 S.R plus service charge.

I like the place. The ambiance is so relaxing. It’s a little pricey for such common meals. I mean I go there pay for 150-300 SR while thinking that I can go to another place that offers almost the same dish for a lower price. But then again, like what I usually say to my friends “hey, just think that we paid for the place and ambiance whenever we go here.”

It’s good to go there once every two months. =)

Love the place! C&G has done quite well to set itself apart from the likes of the other restaurants surrounding it. Love the location, the steep rise of the green hill atop which the building of the restaurant resides. ADORE the bar – it honestly is one CLASSY looking bar. Very very cool. The fact that the menu provides you with such a huge array of meals is simply fabulous. You can never be bored and forced to try the same selections EVER! I’d say give your taste buds a treat and try everything there is to try at C&G’s.

Not a fan of their iced tea, but the minted lemonade more than makes up for it. It’s sharp, fresh taste can jolt even the laziest of people into hyperactivity! Try “Chicken Under a Brick” for a main course, the minted lemonade (iced, not slushed) and the chocolate croissant. Oh and don’t forget the Halloumi and Tomato sandwich if you’re there for a snack.
